This show will feature Pittsburgh-based artist Katy Dement and a (mostly) Richmond-based performance group called Rumput. Both artists will be sharing a style of scrolling panorama artwork called crankies. One of Katy’s pieces will be a recent collaboration with poet, Alex Ward. Rumput performs innovative string band music along with crankies and shadow theater. The group will be premiering two new commissioned works from scrolling panorama artist Dani Iswardana and musician Danis Sugiyanto, both of whom are from Java. Rumput has learned from and collaborated with Danis Sugiyanto and a number of other Javanese musicians for many years. At present, Java and the rest of Indonesia have reported record high deaths from covid-19. Many musicians who made a living from street performing are in critical circumstances both physically and financially. In light of this, 100% of proceeds for this evening will go to musicians in Java.
