This class will be conducted in a non-speaking environment. Beginning signs will focus on functional vocabulary in order to begin initiating conversations. Participants will learn ways to express what they do not understand, as well as utilizing other methods to get their point across. The class will be very interactive. There will not be a formal textbook. Instructor will provide lists of resources, and opportunity to practice.
The class will meets weekly for two hours. There will be a short break. Activities will center around meeting Deaf people, exchanging information and learning more about how Deaf people navigate in a mostly hearing world. There will be some reading assignments outside of class. Some previous review of signs may occur, but the expectation is that the students will find ways to practice outside of class, and be able to progress to new vocabulary. The instructor will offer locations of activities, and set up some possible “field trips”.
This class is open to ages 14 years old and up.
