There is an ancient Chinese curse: “May you live in interesting times”.
The last few years have certainly been interesting! A worldwide pandemic, two impeachments, George Floyd, an insurrection, four indictments, Canada is on fire, our air is filled with smoke, the south and southwest are broiling, the northern hemisphere is on fire, unusually hot weather in the southern hemisphere, the Arctic and Antarctic are melting, the oceans are boiling, the war in Ukraine, thousand-year floods are happening almost every year … etc.
Certainly “interesting times”!
T’ai Chi is an ancient Chinese exercise to maintain physical, emotional, and psychological balance, especially useful in “interesting times.”
Although T’ai Chi is a physical exercise, it is 90% a mental exercise. Under stress, the mind wanders, and we lose our center. Through the practice of T’ai Chi Ch’uan, we train the mind to stay centered while performing very complex physical movements. Sometimes T’ai Chi is called a moving meditation. It begins with the simple word: relax.
T’ai Chi can help us find balance within ourselves, others, and the earth.
